Figs and strawberries in November

by pollygarter @ Friday, Nov. 16, 2007 - 22:51:33

On Tuesday I was in garden and noticed one of figs had a sheen to it and I wondered if it was ripe and edible. My lover tried it and reckoned it was perfect. I also noticed a flash of red and discovered a few wild strawberries in the herb patch which were also eaten with relish.

We've had a couple of frosty nights since, so I've stepped up bird feeding. I have my usual crop of sparrers, pigeons, opportunistic magpies a robin and some blue tits. I definitely have a pair(make your own jokes!) but can't decide whether there are actually four of them as they move so quickly! I've been having to break the ice for then to drink and bathe as it's got quite cold suddenly.

Garden still doing well and my cyclamen are still going strong despite two frosty nights.

This has resonances of the biblical garden of Eden, but in your case, the apple has morphed into a fig.

Getting down to earth, as we are, what on earth are you doing with frosty nights, breaking ice, yet having ripe strawberries to eat and a shiny fig. Do you think your fruits have naturally genetically modified, to flourish at less than Mediterranean warmth growth temperatures?

Mama mia!

Ah! (said she, getting all pedantic) The bible doesn't actually mention apples, merely fruit so it could be a fig...
I really don't understand strawberries and figs and flourishing cyclamen along with ice and frost - I merely observe.

The school minister must've have been waxing apple lyrical for us kids, in that case, about the garden of Eden and the picking of the fruit from the tree, thereof. I wonder if he got confused with the story of gravity?

At least having a fig leaf to hand can support one in retaining ones dignity should the need arise.

You have observed well, but it is all very curious. Are different bits of your garden in different climate zones? :)

For some reason the fruit is always shown as an apple in our culture - Don'y know if it's the same elsewhere. And there's the Greek myth about the golden apple that stopped a female winning a race I seem to remember.

Amused at idea of different climate zones in my garden. Cyclamens, fig tree and strawberries all in sheltered spots, but I still find it puzzling.

It looks as if we might need to wax mythical to get anywhere with the Adam and Eve story. :)
