Twisted woolly liberalism....?

by pollygarter @ Monday, Apr. 30, 2007 - 16:58:31

Today I had my purse nicked and end up most angry with my lover. Welcome to the downside of being a mistress.
I had my purse stolen and it was almost definitely by a man who looks 'of Turkish origin'. I'm unhappy to have had it stolen, but disturbed at the relish his foreign appearance seems to have engendered in witnesses, those I've told etc. I'm sure the bank manager is right that these things seem to be perpetrated by non-indigenous people and I'm also aware that there are foreign gangs of criminals. But also we are happy to have foreigners do our dirty work for knock-down wages, so can't be too surprised if some of them are opporunist petty thieves.
Cardiff is of course multi-racial and thief could be as 'Welsh' as I am. I'm unlikely to ever know.

What's really sad is that I was with my lover when it happened and he was lovely throughout, but had to go home to the wife, reminding me that while ultimately we are all alone, some of us feel more alone than others in certain circumstances.

I have friends who will be lovely and supportive and I know how concerned my lover is for me, but somehow that just doesn't feel enough, so here I am sending out my message in a metaphorical bottle to strangers and waving to my cyber-friends who are as real as me, but happen also to share in this strange cyber world of ours....

Being 'unattached' can be a very hard situation to be in. That said, it can feel extremely lonely in a relationship that isn't working. Sometimes there's a whole lot to be said for this cyber-community of ours.

Really sorry to hear about your purse. Theft has become an everyday way of life sadly; the days of leaving doors and windows unlocked are long gone.

I recall seeing a tourist leave an extremely expensive camera beside his drink in a pub while he went into the loo. He didn't seem at all concerned and as it turned out there were only a few people present and no-one touched it. It's not a chance I'd have taken though.

I'm good at being unattached - Semi-detached is what I find difficult! Agree about loneliness of non-working relationship, though. Weirdly despite the dishonesty for which I bear some responsibility, I find my relationship surprisingly honest.

I'm not wealthy enough to be casual about loss of money, but it's the practicalities of losing cards etc that's worse part of actual theft.

Yes indeed, credit/debit cards, driving license, etc. all need to be cancelled and replaced; an absolute pain in the proverbial.

Awwww sorry to hear about your purse. Having anything taken just invades our own privacy and is just a pain in the butt to sort out.

*hugs*

Thanks, Trolly!
All quite straight forward really. It was saying 'Goodbye' to my lover when I wanted tea and sympathy that most upset me.
Lovely to see you out and about again.

He probably was Turkish. After being married to a Turk, and seeing first hand the immigrant underground world, I'm allowed to be racist!

Big hugs

I am behind the times here - I am so sorry you have had this trauma. It is awful to be left alone to 'finish' the day when it has been one of turmoil; the personal distress does hit home.

Your part time relationship is reminiscent of that of service personnel who really are here today and gone tomorrow, irrespective of whether it is with the hubby, the wife, the girlfriend or lover. The other party feel the same as you have felt and continue to feel. I guess the service men and women do too, but turn to, with the stiff upper lip. Not sure I could do that.

Sorry to hear you lost your purse.
I seem to have missed a load of your posts. Some posts show up on my "Home" page, others don't, God only knows.
Re purse - it does happen. It's a nuisance cancelling and replacing stuf but it's not the end of the world.

Thanks! Couldn't agree more. Far worse things happen. Good to have sense of perspective.

Ah I see now. Hope its been resolved now. It happened to me when I was in Bridgwater. I contacted the bank immediately. They cancelled my cards and sent out new ones to my address within 7 days. They said if I wanted to withdraw cash in the meantime, just to go in person to the bank in town.

Pretty efficient and helpful I thought.

After stressing my girfriend out that afternoon.. I found my purse later that evening!! *twat*

Sadly I concur with lazybugg on the character of Turkish men. I have known TWO other UK women, who left abusive relationships with men.

But its not just Turks, its the way all immigrant communities tend to clique and ghettoise. This then becomes easy for criminal gangs to infiltrate the scene.

The Mafia did it in Italian America. Its nothing new. And the race card shouldnt be played everytime someone flags up these issues. Because I trust that any sane person abhors xenophobia and racism

Ironically the highest degree of inter-ethnic prejudice is most deeply held among the new immigrant communities themselves.

Remember last year, the educated UK Muslim girl of Pakistani origin. She wanted to marry a man of Afghan origin. She was brutally hacked to death by her own in family in a West London suburb. You wont find the likes of Steph and Magnumblogs raise the issues without propaganda.

Lastly, you are right. Liberal Capitalism has made a bargain in that we take immigrants cheap labor, so we must be prepared to accept the social problems immigrants may bring too. Liberal Capitalism will argue, its not a perfect world, but overall there is net gain for the country as a whole. And liberal capitalism would say, besides, its the individuals responsibility to protect their property. The whole American gated-community thing. A change in the traditionally societarian approach that UK has had.

This is all very well, if social mobility was increasing for everyone. But research (probably fabian leftist research) does seem to indicate that social mobility for those at the bottom rung has not increased in the past 10 years of New Labour. This is dissapointing and makes many low income indigenous people more vulnerable to immigrant theft and violence.

Anyways I better halt, I'm beginning to blog in your blog Polly. lol

You are more than welcome - The dialogue and others' perspectives enrich the blogging experience.

"Because I trust that any sane person abhors xenophobia and racism"
Sadly that's not my experience or gut reaction. I'm not going to go all 'political correctness gone mad' on you and excuse bad behaviour and criminality - I expect decency regardless of race and culture, but I DO think there are issues about cheap immigrant labour. Poles and suchlike are the new 'Irish' and vulnerable to exploitation as were the Irish in the past.
My reaction to man in bank was pleasure I felt he was taking in noticing it was 'foreigners' who were doing this sort of thing.

OK, But I unaware of criminality emanating from our Polish intake.

You may remember, Long ago I half jokingly proposed that if UK Muslims persisted and insisted their segrationist and misanthropic tendencies, then the government should issue compulsory purchase orders on their business and property, and deport them, bit by bit. Until they get the message this crap isnt on anymore. Invite new immigrants from sane and friendly countries, such as Poland, Latvia, Hungary, to buy the ex-Muz property through loans schemes.

Extreme? Nuts? Yes. It is a bit. But then so is keeping self consciously separate from those who dont share your culture. Its a form of apartheid. If they want apartheid that much, then let them have apartheid. Go to a country that will be more morally and culturally consonant with their world view. With a 200 hundred grand in their pocket they will be able to set up quite nicely in back in Islamabad, Peshawar, Lahore, Karachi etc. And i'm sure Pakistan would be pleased with the injection of foreign capital. If they love their "brothers" that much, then go help them! Why stay in a country were the women are whores and men drunk. (apparently).

"Fix your women" he said.. Let me fix you a one way air ticket back to 'paradise'.

Representative Democracies suffer unless there is consensus. We dont live in libertarian republic. We live under the next best system. UK Muslim are harming social cohesian. They are like grey squirrels that push out the red squirrels, forrest by forrest... With no inter-breeing between grey and red. Localised conquest. The location of a Mosque determining the cultural postcode lottery, determining white flight.

Poles have only been here a couple of years and already they opened a posh bar in Edinburgh. And dating locals Scots in Inverness. Good on them. Can you imagine UK Muslims opening a pub? Mingling with non Muslims?? Dating Brits??? Our black people have integrated well, there are problems with crime and educational attainment. Not all of that is their fault. And besides the scale of those problems are trivial compared with the apartheid practiced by Muslims. People who arrived in UK in the same era as the windrush peoples.

Houston we gotta problem.

PS. Heard tonight on news, that their buddies where plotting another attack on New York.

I wasn't implying criminality among Poles - Just something I saw about how Poles were being treated in way similar to Irish in previous generations, reminded me of vulnerability of immigrant workforces in general. And vulnerability can become anger, resentment, etc.
