Hand to mouth...

by pollygarter @ Monday, Feb. 26, 2007 - 22:37:08

It's a little strange being under-employed, but I'm determined to make the most of it. I'm actually on leave from my remaining part-time job and am being very self-indulgent. I've had money from a completed project so OK financially for another month. A friend is about to repay a debt and I've actually got my act together and sent off for redundancy money etc. to which I'm entitled.

I'd put off applying foe redundancy as I thought I'd be unlikely to get anything worth having and thought it would be difficult and take ages. Applying was surprisingly straight forward as there is a Govt. dept. that actually deals with it, so I didn't have to negotiate with insolvency people. From my colleague's experience they'll probably get it wrong and there will be some rigmarole but I should be getting a reasonable sum within a few weeks. Anyone in similar position - As well as redundancy there's compensation for lack of notice, holiday pay and unpaid wages that can be part of claim as well.

I've just had offer to do some report writing for a charity and may be able to get some expenses for project I recently completed. Tomorrow I'm seeing colleague with whom I'm hoping to get further work.

Soon I shall be more proactive at seeking out consultancy and casual work - but not just yet...

It's beginning to feel that way, David. Full-time work made me ill and forced a turning point on me which actually allowed me to flourish. The bigger part-time job probably made me complacent, so this feels quite exciting as second redundancy isn't as scary as first.

Good luck with getting the money.
I am incredibly poor but much, much happier that when I was working in a job I hated.

That's the impression I get of your life, which is why I think it was worth you making the choices you did, despite the challenges and the downs between the ups...

PGT this is a useful post for people hesitating to claim their respective dues. It looks like you have choices you can make. Mine tend to be whether or not there is anything to apply for and if there is, don't go in blind.

I think if I do get anything to interest me, it will have to be part time so as to fit in with my other commitments. There will be a lot of people in that position here.

Keep chugging and plugging. :)

Thanks for feedback, Menhir. I'm sure there are people with similar dilemmas and choices as you say. I've just had notification of first part of redundancy payment (within a week!) and they have got it wrong. I think they confused my D.O.B. with my phone number and thought I was in my twenties and lopping thirty odd years off my age meant I was under-paid. They'll send me the difference soon it seems. I'm now having to furnish proof for unpaid wages and holidays, but it will be worth it...
I shall keep chugging and plugging and hope your work-life balance goes well too.

Thanks - nowt on the horizon yet - ideas, but nothing evolving.

If the wolves are not actually scratching the door, it's nice to be able to just play with ideas...

Yes, that's true, but not for an indeterminate period.

I do hope your consultancies take off, (you show such a lot of talent in so many areas), and the feelers you are putting out, bear fruit.

Why, thank you! I do so enjoy you're take on life, even when you're not being exceedingly complimentary about me!

Personally, if I had enough money to live modestly but comfortably, I'd love to give up paid work. South East Wales, the Internet, books and other sources of interest would keep me happily occupied for life.

We're in danger of forming a mutual complimentary society here! :))

What in particular about S E Wales magnetises you?

Nothing wrong with a few compliments! I'm not overly magnetised by SE Wales, although I really like it. What I meant is that there is so much going on culturally, educationally and interest-wise that it would be easy to be occupied without being a wage-slave. I am conscious that some of my friends elsewhere do not have similar diversions practically on their doorsteps...

How right you are - there's a lot to be said for living within reach of a university cultural centre and have the other things like countryside, crafts and in general a range of lifestyles to observe and enjoy as one chooses. It is the best of many worlds and life balances provided transport infrastructure is in there somewhere as well.

You are so right! I am a car owner. I have a bus stop on my street. I am in easy walking distance of a local railway station. I can choose solitude or find humanity in myriad form practically on my dooorstep. And being on edge of city I can be in nature very quickly as well.
Of course apathy stops me taking advantage more often than not, but I know I'm lucky to have such options...

To me, it sounds ideal. :)
