On being a tourist...

by pollygarter @ Friday, Jul. 28, 2006 - 20:40:18

I love doing tourist stuff, and I'm one of the few people who enjoy being a tourist on their metaphoric doorstep.

My lover and I have managed to spend some time together recently. I repaid him for my various tours of Swansea with some sightseeing in Cardiff and its environs. it's just lovely seeing someone respond to things and places one likes oneself. A friend of mine was surprised when I volunteered to take her and her brother (unknown to me before our day out)to St Fagans, our wonderful folk museum. more recently I took great pleasure taking my lover around the museum with its amazing collection of Welsh historic buildings put together in a lovely landscape.

This week has been the amazing Castell Coch and Caerphilly Castle.

Castell Coch (red castle)is a fabulous fairytale castle constructed by Burgess for Bute when he was richest man in the UK and seemed to own most of Wales. It is a magical looking plaything of a building set in woodland a few miles outside Cardiff.

In contrast Caerphilly Castle is an imposing and very real Norman castle built to control the Welsh - So a castle in Wales rather than a Welsh castle... it does look wonderfully impressive though.

We've also been back to Penarth and mooched around various garden centres. It's been very holiday-like doing fun stuff together.

Nice to see you blogging again! Wondered where you had got to. Yes we are lucky people that we have all these lovely destinations just a short car ride away.

Thanks! Been playing at being a tourist and enjoying the weather. Too hot to work so I timed it well!
I'm impressed by all your activity though! Nice to hear you sounding so lively.

Very impressed that you have a metaphoric doorstep. Like many others I have only an alliterative garden gate and an idiosyncratic shed.

Is it metaphoric rather than metaphorical? Your version does sound right.. And why is it you can never find a good pedant when you need one?
I too have an alliterative garden gate but lack an idiosyncratic shed, although I have a cornucopia of a side passage instead...

I vaguely remember Penarth and of course the Welsh Castles too.

I have had a few days out to be a tourist on my ex-doorstep and revelled in it. I had one day for me and two outings with a Lithuanian woman who was on holiday but also working at improving her use of the English language. It is enjoyable isn't it.

Absolutely! it's so easy to be superior to the grockles and miss out on the easily available pleasures of being a tourist in your own area. Doing so gives an extra buzz of 'ownership' which you don't get elsewhere. I can understand avoiding rip-off destinations but I wonder how many Londoners have visited the amazing London museum or the bizare and lovely Postman's (Postmens'[?]) Park...
