I heard lovely programme called 'Organ Transplant' on R4's 'Sunday Best'. it was about musical organs in churches being given second lease of life in Latvia. Now I'm an atheist, but there was something terribly touching and heartwarming about it all. I also have metaphorical cloth ears, so Christians getting excited about organs shouldn't have necessarily appealed, but somehow did.
And today I caught 'Start the Week' and interesting dialogue about Jewishness centred around whether anti-Semitism helps to forge Jewish identity. Baddiel who was hosting is a secular Jew and atheist, but obviously still sees himself as Jewish. I guess that cultural Jewishness thing could be applied to other religions, although less obviously so closely bound. I guess if I'd been brought up in Northern ireland, my atheism would have ben an irrelevence as others would have identified me as 'Catholic'. I suppose my friend who's 'Half-Catholic' may have it right...
Also on 'Start the Week' was Marian Keyes, Queen of ChickLit with intelligence. I loved her pronouncements on identity, Irishness, feminism and post-feminism. I've always proclaimed the right of feminists to wear frilly knickers - She went for wearing pink, buying lipstick and eating chocolate - Yo, Sister and all that!
